Founded in 1705, Bath is North Carolina’s first town, recently celebrating its 300th anniversary. The original town limits are the boundaries of a National Register historic district.
Bath was the one-time home of Blackbeard the pirate.
The first public library in the colony was established in Bath with the delivery of 1000 books to St. Thomas parish in 1701.
In its infancy, Washington was a regional shipping center because of its strategic location at the junction of inland and coastal rivers. The shipping heritage is evident in some waterfront commercial building from that era.
